New Year’s Resolutions : Easy as 1,2,3

(1) Learn to Appreciate your Reflection

We often focus so much on the things we don’t like about our face and body that we miss the features that we should love. This doesn’t mean you have to completely fall in love with yourself and spend each day taking bathroom-mirror selfies, but you should find something uplifting about your appearance, at least one thing.  

At first you’ll feel a little silly standing in front of the mirror and saying “I love you,” but over time, you’ll internalize the notion that you and most of your features are entirely lovable. The idea that you’re going to embrace every aspect of your appearance just isn’t realistic, so don’t force it.


If you do find yourself over-analyzing a particular feature, make certain it’s one that you have the ability to change. If you cannot change it, you’re not allowed to criticize it.  Most things we don't’ like about ourselves are temporary and changeable anyway - for example, a bad hair day, or a bad haircut, feeling bloated, a zit breakout, a wrong shade of makeup, you get the point!


Take action for what you can change and don’t dwell on temporary setbacks - when you’re getting ready, gaze at your own reflection with gratitude, fixate on your best features and just rock your favorite outfit anyway.  Confidence is in character, not a perfect reflection. Resolution #1: Find one feature you love about yourself. Wake up and repeat.  


(2) Stop Comparing Yourself to Others

We’re in the age when everyone’s social media is flooded with photoshopped images and seemingly picture-perfect lives. We’re fooled into believing that others lead more exciting lives than our own - with their fun trips, big parties, expensive purchases and so on. The fact of the matter is that some people’s lives are indeed more blessed in some categories, but no one (no matter how rich, smart , famous or beautiful they are) is devoid of problems, grief and struggle.


Because there is an infinite number of categories upon which we can compare ourselves and an almost infinite number of people to compare ourselves to, comparison is the thief of joy.  It’s easy to become fixated on the happiness of others, while questioning why you don’t have it so good. But chances are, you do.


It all boils down to the measuring stick with which you compare yourself. When you see others doing well, your thoughts should start and stop with, “I am happy for them.” You have to practice this to make it habitual and you’ll eliminate negativity once you do. Here’s a little secret: The only appropriate measuring stick to determine self-worth is to compare yourself with yourself over a period of time. It’s perfectly okay to turn to others to emulate their success and draw inspiration, but you must immediately stop drawing direct comparisons. 


Resolution #2: Grab a piece of paper right now and write down 3 personal growth desires for 2019. For example, maybe you’d like to go back to school or ask your boss for a raise or volunteer your time for a noble cause. Great! Now, tuck that note away and on January 1, 2020 compare your old 2019 self to current 2020 self - have you become more impressive? Year-over-year set bigger goals and just keep raising the bar. Repeat this exercise annually, and you’ll be so focused on living a fulfilled life, social media comparisons will have lost their stronghold.

(3) Create Capacity

When asked, most people say the number one thing they are unhappy about is their weight.  These same people will put fitness into their New Year’s resolutions but fizzle out before ever getting started because getting in shape is a daunting task.  The quickest way to take the wind out of your own sails is to place the demand that you have to workout 5 days a week and lose your first 10 pounds in January. Not so!  Here’s what to do instead:


Resolution #3: Grab your calendar right now and look at your commitments for today. Identify an open time slot for 20 minutes. Don’t put this off until tomorrow.  With no exception find the time today. Now lace up your shoes and start walking - walk 10 minutes in one direction and 10 minutes back. On your first day, you don’t need weights or a membership or to even break into a sweat. 


You simply need to start moving and start right this moment. When you lace up your shoes, your brain chemistry aligns to the fact that you’re going to start moving and your body craves more of what you give it. Once you have created the capacity in your calendar and developed the habit of movement, now you’re ready to decide what gym or activity to join and from there you’re safe to set an actual fitness goal.  Some people never join a gym but rather fast-walk the mall (in winter months to stay warm plus it’s free) or run outside and get a set of 5 - 15 lb weights for light strength training.


The possibilities are endless and 2019 is going to be your year. Set small goals and be proud of each success (see Resolution #2).
